This canvas print presents Katsushika Hokusai’s richly patterned vision of a celestial bird-woman playing a flute. Created around 1820–1833, the composition combines ukiyo-e elegance with imagery rooted in Buddhist tradition

“Mystical Bird (Karyōbinga)” sweeps across the eye like a melody wearing feathers. A serene musician raises her flute while extravagant wings, patterned robes, curling ribbons, and flashes of vermilion and blue turn the scene into controlled turbulence. Katsushika Hokusai balances delicate facial lines against a splendid thicket of plumage and fabric, making stillness and motion coexist. This canvas print preserves that lively tension, from the bird’s layered pinions to the tiny decorative forms that seem ready to flutter loose.

The karyōbinga belongs to Buddhist imagery and is associated with paradise, where its voice is said to possess extraordinary beauty. Tradition makes the creature an impossibly precocious performer: it can supposedly sing while still inside its shell, which sets a rather unfair standard for every ordinary hatchling. Created during the mature flowering of ukiyo-e, the design lets Katsushika Hokusai treat ornament as movement rather than mere embellishment. On this canvas print, the flute almost becomes visible music, carried outward by ribbons, feathers, and repeating curves until the entire composition appears to breathe in rhythm.
