This canvas print presents the dramatic 1634 interpretation of Joseph escaping Potiphar's wife by Rembrandt van Rijn. Strong contrasts, agitated lines, and tangled bedding express the tension of the biblical episode in the visual language of the Dutch Baroque

“Joseph and Potiphar's Wife”, stages a biblical escape as a burst of tangled fabric, grasping hands, and urgent motion. Joseph twists toward the open side of the scene while Potiphar's wife reclines amid pillows and curtains, turning a luxurious bedchamber into a trap. Rembrandt van Rijn drives the eye with sharp contrasts: pale bodies and rumpled linen flare against a dense, nearly swallowing darkness. The canvas print preserves the nervous energy of every line, from Joseph's awkward retreat to the woman's determined grip.

Created in 1634 during the Dutch Baroque, the scene draws on Genesis, where Joseph rejects his master's wife and flees, leaving his garment behind; that abandoned cloth later becomes false evidence against him. Rembrandt van Rijn avoids polished heroics and makes the episode feel alarmingly human, even faintly comic in its choreography: one figure scrambles away while the other seems to conduct a storm of bedding. In this canvas print, the bedpost stands like a stern witness, while the shadows appear ready to swallow the testimony.
