This canvas print presents Jan Toorop’s two stylized female figures, rhythmic contours, vivid blue and yellow fields, and a mysterious handheld clock. Art Nouveau ornament merges with symbolic imagery, turning hair, limbs, stars, and question marks into an intricate visual puzzle

“Two Stylized Female Figures with Clock in Hand” transforms an everyday timekeeper into the prop of a private myth. Two women, outlined with emphatic black curves, inhabit opposing pools of blue and yellow while stars, profiles, hooks, and question-mark shapes crowd around them. Their striped hair behaves like a maze with excellent manners: every band stays orderly, yet the whole arrangement feels wonderfully unsettled. Hands overlap, faces drift between profile and emblem, and the clock becomes less an instrument than a clue. The canvas print keeps this electric balance of warm light, cool shadow, and nervous line sharply in view.

Jan Toorop helped give Art Nouveau a symbolic, psychologically charged edge, and this image shows why ornament in his hands rarely remains merely decorative. Born on Java and later central to Dutch modern art, he absorbed an unusually broad range of visual traditions. His writhing linear style became so recognizable that Dutch audiences associated it with his celebrated salad-oil advertisement—a delightfully domestic nickname for such mystical curves. On this canvas print, the figures might be priestesses of punctuality, guardians of a dream, or conspirators deciding whether time deserves an answer. The image refuses to settle the matter, which is precisely its charm.
