This canvas print presents Gustav Klimt’s richly ornamented Hygieia, the Greek goddess of health, holding her sacred serpent. Crimson robes, golden patterns, and a commanding frontal pose reflect the decorative intensity of the Viennese Secession
“Hygieia (Detail from Medicine)”, confronts the viewer with the calm authority of someone who already knows the diagnosis. Gustav Klimt surrounds the Greek goddess of health with crimson ribbons, gold disks, intricate ornaments, and a pale serpent that loops across her body like a living signature. Her half-closed eyes and raised chin feel ceremonial rather than comforting; this is medicine dressed for an imperial procession. The canvas print preserves the striking tension between her modeled face and the nearly abstract cascade of pattern below it.
Hygieia carries the traditional serpent and cup associated with healing, symbols still echoed in modern pharmacy emblems. Yet Gustav Klimt makes the snake look less like a clinical assistant and more like an extravagant piece of jewelry with opinions. The figure came from Medicine, one of his controversial paintings for the University of Vienna, whose professors found his vision insufficiently reassuring. That turbulent history adds bite to the canvas print: beneath all the glowing ornament lies a sly challenge to tidy ideas about science, health, and authority.
