This canvas print reproduces Gustav Klimt’s 1912–13 portrait of Mäda Primavesi, framed by a lilac floral field. The young sitter’s white dress, direct gaze, and confident stance reflect the decorative daring and playful color of the Viennese Secession
“Mäda Primavesi (1903–2000)” presents a child with the composure of a tiny monarch and the stance of someone already bored by ceremony. Her white dress spreads into a pale triangle, while a floral sash, an enormous hair bow, and scattered flecks of color animate the lilac background like unusually elegant confetti. One hand rests firmly at her side; the other vanishes behind her back. This canvas print preserves both her startlingly direct gaze and the loose, almost rustling rhythm of the surrounding color.
Gustav Klimt created the portrait in 1912–13, when the decorative language of the Viennese Secession had become unmistakably his own. Mäda was the daughter of Otto Primavesi, a banker, industrialist, and important patron whose family supported Vienna’s adventurous art world. The life dates in the title create a curious time tunnel: the sitter remains nine years old here, although she lived through almost the entire twentieth century. The canvas print turns that contrast into its quiet joke—flowers flutter everywhere, yet Mäda appears entirely unimpressed by their commotion.
