This canvas print depicts a jockey leaning forward as his chestnut horse charges across the course. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec captures speed through spare lines, open space, and flashes of blue, ocher, and black
“Jockey at a Gallop” streaks sideways with the breathless economy of a visual telegram. The chestnut horse seems stretched by speed, its forelegs reaching forward while the hind legs kick back in an airborne burst. Above it, the jockey folds into a compact blue-and-white knot, intent on the course ahead. Loose contours, pale ground, and scattered marks leave plenty of air around the pair, making their charge feel even faster. The canvas print preserves that delightful tension between careful observation and marks that appear to have arrived at a gallop themselves.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec made this youthful equestrian study around 1878, long before the cabarets, dancers, and nightlife celebrities that would define his mature reputation. Horses fascinated him early, and here the future Post-Impressionist already treats movement as a matter of rhythm rather than polished detail. The animal is elongated almost to comic-book proportions, yet the pose remains sharply believable: speed bends anatomy without quite breaking it. As a canvas print, the work offers a glimpse of an adolescent artist testing how few strokes are needed before a horse begins to thunder.
