The Langlois Bridge at Arles with Women Washing (1888) - Vincent van Gogh - Canvas Print

This canvas print shows how Vincent van Gogh depicted the Langlois Bridge and washerwomen beside a canal in 1888. Vivid blues, sunlit yellows, a passing carriage, and rhythmic brushwork animate the Post-Impressionist landscape near Arles

“The Langlois Bridge at Arles with Women Washing” turns an ordinary canal crossing into a sunlit machine of color. Golden beams rise against an improbably blue sky, while the bridge’s chains and braces form a jaunty geometry above the water. Below, women bend over their washing, boats nudge the bank, and a small carriage crosses as if the whole landscape has briefly synchronized its errands. This canvas print preserves the scene’s delightful tension between careful structure and restless brushwork. Vincent van Gogh makes the canal shimmer, the masonry flicker, and even the reeds seem unable to stand still.

Painted in March 1888, soon after Vincent van Gogh arrived in Arles, the scene belonged to his eager search for the bright southern light he had imagined before coming to Provence. The bridge was a modern drawbridge, yet its crisp silhouette reminded him of Japanese prints, whose bold outlines and flattened spaces deeply shaped his vision. That makes this canvas print a curious meeting place: Dutch engineering, Provençal laundry day, Japanese-inspired composition, and one famously excitable painter all sharing the same canal. Even the horse appears unusually composed, perhaps wisely leaving the visual commotion to the water.
