The Port of Nice (1881 - 1882) - Berthe Morisot - Canvas Print

€ 66.00

This canvas print presents Berthe Morisot’s Impressionist view of Nice harbor, where pale blue water, clustered boats, and restless masts dissolve into brisk, airy strokes. Painted during the winter of 1881–1882, the scene balances maritime bustle with luminous calm

“The Port of Nice” shimmers like a harbor remembered between two blinks. Berthe Morisot lets pale blue water claim most of the view, while cropped hulls, tilted spars, ropes, and clustered masts jostle above it in sandy ocher, navy, rust, and pearl gray. The brushwork refuses to stand at attention: reflections skip, boats blur at their edges, and the distant waterfront seems to breathe through winter haze. This canvas print preserves that exhilarating imbalance between broad, open water and the busy thicket of maritime geometry.

Created during the winter of 1881–1882, the scene belongs to Impressionism, yet it offers no polished postcard of the Riviera. Berthe Morisot makes looking itself the subject: the eye darts from a blue slash to a dangling line, then loses its bearings among vessels that nearly become abstract shapes. A canvas print gives the quick marks room to behave like weather—flickering, colliding, and changing direction before they can settle. The harbor may be full of working boats, but the composition has the mischievous energy of a sketch that slipped past the harbor master and declared itself finished.
