This canvas print presents an Impressionist scene in which Berthe Morisot depicts two elegantly dressed women boating on a lake in the Bois de Boulogne. Loose strokes and luminous greens, blues, and whites convey shifting water, foliage, and Parisian leisure
“The Lake in the Bois De Boulogne” catches a boating excursion in mid-glide, as if the afternoon has forgotten to hold still. Two fashionably dressed women anchor the foreground while water, foliage, and distant walkers dissolve into quick strokes of mint, cobalt, cream, and gray. One woman turns toward her companion; the other meets the viewer with an expression poised between curiosity and distraction. The canvas print preserves that delicious tension between an intimate encounter and a park alive with flickering motion.
Berthe Morisot painted the scene around 1879, when the Bois de Boulogne served Paris as both green refuge and social theater. Respectable leisure had its choreography: hats, gloves, parasols, and carefully managed appearances, even in a rocking boat. Yet Impressionism gleefully loosens the etiquette here. Ducks become brisk dabs, reflections refuse to behave, and the shoreline seems to improvise. This canvas print makes Morisot’s visual wit especially clear: the ladies observe the lake, the viewer observes the ladies, and the ducks appear magnificently indifferent to everyone.
