This canvas print presents the 1889 portrait by Edvard Munch of Norwegian writer Hans Jæger, seated heavily in an armchair beside a glass. Cool blues, loose brushwork, and the sitter’s guarded gaze give the scene a tense, distinctly modern psychological presence
“Hans Jæger”, catches a man who does not merely sit in his chair but seems to sink into it after a long, argumentative evening. His broad hat presses the brow into shadow, his cheeks glow with rusty warmth, and his blue clothing merges with the upholstery in one cool, heavy wave. Edvard Munch avoids polished ceremony: loose strokes make the face appear tired, suspicious, and still ready with a sharp reply. In this canvas print, one hand droops over the chair while the glass on the table stands almost comically upright.
Jæger was a writer, anarchist, and notorious voice of Kristiania’s bohemian circle, where art, politics, love, and scandal rarely stayed in separate rooms. His novel about bohemian life was confiscated, and its author was punished, giving the portrait a rebellious backstory without requiring a single heroic pose. Perhaps that is why Munch shows him as both formidable and worn down, a radical temporarily defeated by furniture. The 1889 portrait already hints at Expressionism’s interest in inner pressure rather than social polish. The canvas print’s quietest joke may be that the water glass looks more disciplined than its famously unruly companion.
