This canvas print presents Puberty, an Expressionist work created by Edvard Munch in 1894–95. A solitary adolescent sits on a bed while an enlarged shadow rises behind her, turning the sparse interior into a tense study of transition

“Puberty” confronts the uneasy instant when childhood seems to have departed but adulthood has not yet explained the rules. An adolescent sits on the edge of a bed, arms crossed and knees pressed together; her direct gaze appears watchful, uncertain, and strangely composed. Behind her, a dark shadow swells like a silent double or a curtain waiting for an unfamiliar play to begin. In this canvas print, pale blues, ochers, and bruised browns make the room feel stark, while rough contours give the figure a fragile immediacy. Edvard Munch created the work in 1894–95, as Expressionism was beginning to find its charged visual language.

Edvard Munch often turned ordinary rooms into psychological stages, and here nearly the entire drama unfolds between the figure and her shadow. That shadow is hardly realistic; it resembles anxiety arriving before its explanation and making itself comfortable in the room. The exaggeration invites interpretations involving change, self-consciousness, sexuality, and vulnerability rather than simple portraiture. The canvas print holds its tension through a sly contradiction: the bed promises rest, yet the guarded pose, level stare, and enormous dark shape refuse to let the scene relax for even a moment.
