This canvas print presents the expressionist index Edvard Munch created for the Alpha and Omega narrative, with handwritten episode titles, symbols, faces, and undulating black bands. Created around 1908–1909, the composition turns a practical contents page into a lively visual prologue
“Table of Contents” behaves less like a tidy index than a theatrical curtain stitched from ink-black waves. Down the center, Edvard Munch stacks episode names from his strange Alpha and Omega story, while moons, flowers, animals, tears, and tiny emblems interrupt the list like impatient actors. On either side, repeated bands swell and buckle around two comic faces—one beaming, one apparently caught mid-gasp. The canvas print retains the jolting rhythm of Expressionism: stark contrast, nervous lettering, and marks that seem to wiggle before the plot has even begun.
Made around 1908–1909, the image introduces the illustrated fable by Edvard Munch about Alpha and Omega, the first human pair on an island where desire, jealousy, and disaster rapidly refuse to behave. The canvas print's central inventory calmly announces episodes involving a bear, tiger, pig, tears, escape, despair, and death, which is roughly the least reassuring Table of Contents imaginable. Yet its doodle-like symbols keep the tragedy mischievous. It feels like a program designed by someone who knows the evening ends badly but cannot resist drawing a flower beside the warning.
