This canvas print presents Jan Toorop’s 1898 Art Nouveau cover design for Louis Couperus’ Psyche, with a reclining winged figure amid streaming lines. Floral arabesques, stars, and stylized lettering unite the literary subject with the period’s ornamental rhythm
“Cover Design for Louis Couperus’ Psyche” turns a book cover into a small cosmology of wings, tendrils, stars, and hair that seems caught in a supernatural current. A pale, reclining Psyche hovers within a dense ornamental field, while Jan Toorop lets every contour curl into the next: body becomes feather, feather becomes wave, and wave nearly becomes lettering. The canvas print preserves the design’s delicious tension between stillness and unstoppable motion. Even the typography appears less printed than grown, as if the title had sprouted in an enchanted greenhouse.
Created in or before 1898 for Louis Couperus’ allegorical novel, the image belongs to the sinuous world of Art Nouveau, yet its black-and-white intricacy also hints at Symbolism’s appetite for dreams. Psyche, whose name means soul in Greek and who is often imagined with butterfly wings, seems both heroine and decorative weather system here. The canvas print gives ample room to Toorop’s famous whiplash lines, which behave like vines with strong opinions. Look long enough and the composition starts playing a visual game: are the curves framing the figure, carrying her, or quietly plotting to swallow the book whole?
